Supply Chain Management Students Make a Fresh Impression
Mon, February 06, 2017
A group of Humber Supply Chain Management students impressed judges and made it into the top 6 of The Fresh Connection Supply Chain Case Competition.
Gaya Mohapatra, Kaileigh Wicha, Sukhveer Dhaliwal, Pradip Sharma and Tomas Suliman competed against 15 other teams at the District level after beating a number of other college teams from the Greater Toronto Area.
The Fresh Connection APICS Global Student Challenge is an annual competition between student teams from across the world. Students work together in teams of four to make the best strategic and tactical choices for the value chain to save the virtual company, The Fresh Connection, from financial ruin.
Each team member becomes either Vice President Purchasing, Vice President Operations, Vice President Sales or Vice President Supply Chain. Together they have to make the company profitable again by getting the highest possible return on investment.
“To win the competition, our students used a secret strategy that we teach – we call it collaboration,” says Angelo Crupi, Supply Chain Management program coordinator.

Michelin Challenge Design Competition
Fri, October 21, 2016
Alumnus Kurt Scanlan has placed 3rd in the Michelin Challenge Design Competition with a project he developed in his 4th-year Vehicle Studio class.
Josh Gadomski, from the same class was a finalist in the same competition. Their were 10 finalists (including the three eventual winners) and 10 honourable mentions beyond that.
This is a great achievement - the Michelin Challenge Design Competition is an established worldwide competition and the competition is always very stiff. We have had students achieve "Honourable Mentions" in the past (Ryan Ebbers in the 2016 competition and Jordie Lewis in the 2011 competition), but this is the first and only time that we have placed in the Michelin Challenge.
To have had two students from a single studio class be considered finalists in a worldwide competition is very special indeed.

HSF Tetris Bench
Wed, September 14, 2016
The Humber Students' Federation has some new furniture to show off thanks to students from multiple programs in the School of Applied Technology.
HSF hosted a design competition for outdoor furniture last fall, and received a number of incredible entries. The winning design was submitted by Kimberlyn Dampitan of the Bachelor of Industrial Design program. Her concept was to add a playful, retro feeling to the space by creating life-sized Tetris pieces that can be moved into different configurations based on how students want to use the furniture.
Once the design was chosen, HSF commissioned students in the Industrial Woodworking Technician and Cabinet Making program to build the pieces. Over the winter semester, Allen Picanco, Richard Eng, and A.J. Zumpano constructed the pieces using a variety of hand tools and CNC equipment.
The HSF student executives, builders, and designer were able to meet this week to officially unveil the new furniture.
Building The Right Career
Mon, September 12, 2016
Humber graduate, Shelly Vo, is a cabinetmaker who recently completed a one-year cabinet making program.
With only one other woman in Shelly's small shop, which is home to several Humber graduates, her gender has never been an issue. “It’s a very team-oriented environment and everyone feels equal in our shop. Humber brings up cabinetmakers that are respectful,” she says. “I would encourage young women in high school to take woodworking and other trades courses. The sooner you figure out doing what you love, the longer you can enjoy doing it.”
Greenhouse Research Experiment
Wed, July 27, 2016
A greenhouse experiment is being conducted this semester to examine the effect of salt and fertilizer on the establishment of native plants.
Two native seed mixes, as well as the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario standard roadside seed mix, are being tested. Ben Doerksen, a work-study from the Landscape Technician program is assisting with the research. Humber School of Applied Technology instructor Lynn Short is a partner and co-applicant for this project.
Phase I of an outdoor study examining the effect of cover crops (oats, annual ryegrass, and pearl millet) on weed suppression prior to the establishment of native plants is also being completed. A literature review and a list of recommendations for future research will be compiled. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is an external partner of Humber College in this research.
Humber Visual Elements NIKE PAVE Project
Wed, July 20, 2016
There will be 16 students participating in The Humber Visual Elements NIKE PAVE project competition to design a NIKE shoe wall.
This wall will be built by Visual Elements and showcased at Globalshop 2017 in Vegas. There are 8 teams of 4th-year students that will be competing within Humber BID for this project.
Students were invited to meet Andy Thaemert of NIKE (Senior Creative Director of Global Retail Design) at Visual Elements who gave the students feedback on their preliminary proposals. They were then given a tour of the impressive manufacturing facilities of Visual Elements by Robert Turk, John Simmen and Randy Simmen.
A video conference feedback session was held recently with Andy Thaemert, Randy Simmen and Neal Claassen from So Showcases (PAVE representative) to allow each of the 8 student teams 15 minutes for feedback on their proposals sent to NIKE.
The winning team will be chosen by NIKE and Visual Elements. The scheme will be built in Toronto by Visual Elements to be showcased at Globalshop in Las Vegas on March 2017.
The winning team will have the opportunity to travel to Vegas for Globalshop and for the construction of the proposal for the NIKE wall. Final presentations are tentatively scheduled for Dec.1
Humber Students Create a Sustainable Design Space through the Design of The Kortright Centre
Wed, July 13, 2016
Humber faculty, architectural technology students, and interior design students partnered with the TRCA (Toronto and Region Conservation Authority).

Centre for Technology and Innovation (North Campus) Funding
Mon, April 04, 2016
The federal government announced a new $2-billion fund to help post-secondary institutions improve research and innovation infrastructure.
The Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) will help Canadian colleges and universities improve the quality of facilities dedicated to innovation, training, research and environmental sustainability. Colleges were requested to submit projects that met funding criteria and a substantial completion requirement of April 2018.
We are very excited to announce that the School of Applied technology has applied for the funding of the Centre for Technology and Innovation (North Campus).
Preliminary planning is underway with the School of Applied Technology, the School of Media Studies and Information Technology and Humber Research to develop a state-of-the-art idea accelerator, with programs focused on sustainable building practices, automated manufacturing and human-centered, technology-enabled solutions. Planning is in progress for the construction of a 70,000-square-foot building that will be located in the area that is currently parking lot 3A, between the LRC and the University of Guelph-Humber building.
