Tiam Rahmani wins third prize in the PAVE Student Design Competition.

Humber Bachelor of Interior Design student, Tiam Rahmani, has placed in an international student design competition – the only one from a Canadian postsecondary institution to do so.

Rahmani, who is in her fourth year of the program, won third prize in the PAVE Student Design Competition, store design category.

Her task was to create an innovative design for Kroger (a United States grocery chain) and its “Total Health” section of the store.

This marks the ninth time a Humber grad has won this prestigious award. Recipients also receive a $5,000 bursary in their name to support current students at the college.

As the third-place winner, Rahmani took home $1500, got to travel to New York to accept her award at the Planning and Visual Education (PAVE) gala, and has been invited to the Student Program at Retail’s BIG Show, a three-day conference, in New York next month.

Michelin Challenge Design Competition

Michelin Challenge Design Competition

Fri, October 21, 2016

Alumnus Kurt Scanlan has placed 3rd in the Michelin Challenge Design Competition with a project he developed in his 4th-year Vehicle Studio class.

Josh Gadomski, from the same class was a finalist in the same competition. Their were 10 finalists (including the three eventual winners) and 10 honourable mentions beyond that.

This is a great achievement - the Michelin Challenge Design Competition is an established worldwide competition and the competition is always very stiff. We have had students achieve "Honourable Mentions" in the past (Ryan Ebbers in the 2016 competition and Jordie Lewis in the 2011 competition), but this is the first and only time that we have placed in the Michelin Challenge.

To have had two students from a single studio class be considered finalists in a worldwide competition is very special indeed.

HSF Tetris Bench

HSF Tetris Bench

Wed, September 14, 2016

The Humber Students' Federation has some new furniture to show off thanks to students from multiple programs in the School of Applied Technology.

HSF hosted a design competition for outdoor furniture last fall, and received a number of incredible entries.  The winning design was submitted by Kimberlyn Dampitan of the Bachelor of Industrial Design program.  Her concept was to add a playful, retro feeling to the space by creating life-sized Tetris pieces that can be moved into different configurations based on how students want to use the furniture.

Once the design was chosen, HSF commissioned students in the Industrial Woodworking Technician and Cabinet Making program to build the pieces. Over the winter semester, Allen Picanco, Richard Eng, and A.J. Zumpano constructed the pieces using a variety of hand tools and CNC equipment.

The HSF student executives, builders, and designer were able to meet this week to officially unveil the new furniture.

Greenhouse Research Experiment

Wed, July 27, 2016

A greenhouse experiment is being conducted this semester to examine the effect of salt and fertilizer on the establishment of native plants.

Two native seed mixes, as well as the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario standard roadside seed mix, are being tested. Ben Doerksen, a work-study from the Landscape Technician program is assisting with the research. Humber School of Applied Technology instructor Lynn Short is a partner and co-applicant for this project.

Phase I of an outdoor study examining the effect of cover crops (oats, annual ryegrass, and pearl millet) on weed suppression prior to the establishment of native plants is also being completed. A literature review and a list of recommendations for future research will be compiled. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is an external partner of Humber College in this research.

Target Showcases 5 new products designed by Humber Industrial Design Students

Wed, April 20, 2016

Back to College Campaign begins its selection for incredible industrial design products created for students by students.

This campaign happens every year and is a collaboration between Umbra and Target. In 2015, Target showcased 3 designs created by Humber 3rd year industrial designs students; the Flip top Laptop Tray, the Over-the-Door-Laundry-Bag and Over-the-Door-Organizer were displayed in Target stores all the over the US.

Once again, our students wowed the judges in the 2016 challenge. The four 2016 Humber design winners were:

  • The TRIFOLD Wall Organizer by Adam Sherk and Eric O'Niel
  • The CONTOUR Over the Wood Hooks by Anthony Gibson & Veronica Hernandez
  • The POSE Wall Mirror Shelf designed by Daniel Puntillo & Leyland Gard
  • The BEND Bookend and Desk Organizer designed by Ben Nobels & Elizabeth Muhrbeck

The new range of products had just been launched last week at Target Retail for the 2016 campaign. In addition to the 4 new designs chosen this year, one of the previous design: "FLIPTOP Lap Top Tray" has been selected to continue production for 2016, as seen among the retail display. The designs were chosen between 3 other schools between Canadian and the US. We are very proud that our Humber students have designed 5 of the 10 designs chosen for this year's campaign.

Interested in purchasing these awesome new products for your return to school? Target now ships to Canada!

Congratulations to our students and happy shopping!
