One of the many reasons Jordyn is passionate about interior design is the ability it has to influence the way people feel and operate within their environments. She loves to consider user experiences, needs and wellbeing in her projects and believes that the way spaces make people “feel” is a crucial component in an effective design. For her thesis, Jordyn has chosen to create a coworking space for content creators and online business- focusing on improving overall creativity, productivity, and wellbeing for the users. Jordyn’s thesis centers around incorporating various activity-based workspaces so that users have the ability to choose unique work environments based on their work activities, moods or goals.
A coworking space for content creators and online businesses located on 415 Eastern Avenue. This will give users the opportunity to network, collaborate and connect with people in similar fields. It also provides amenities to help them build their online platforms. Some of the amenities will include podcasting, photography, filming/ content, and sound recording spaces. The thesis also focuses on the idea of activity-based workspaces- a concept that provides options for users to choose their work spaces based on mood, work activities and goals.
The concept explores the idea of connection, networking and the linking of ideas. This is shown through grid-like patterns and forms. Each rod works in the network of ideas eventually coming together to build a cube; a strong and tangible form. The links also represent the network of people and how the coworking space brings people together. Light is also considered as an idea that plays on the flash of a camera; an important tool used by content creators and online businesses. Activity-based workspaces were also a big part of the research and design. An important part of implementing activity-based workspaces is considering the 5 nodes of work; learn, focus, collaborate, socialize and rejuvenate. By providing activity-based workspaces it will contribute to wellbeing and therefore increase productivity and creativity.
Located on the basement floor is the café/ event space. On the outskirts there are a couple meeting rooms, private offices and, a copy/ print area and rooms for podcasting/ filming content. There's also some washrooms as well as a photography/ sound studio. The first floor is located where the entrances are. Both entrances lead to the reception area where there is a nearby lounge, coat closet, universal washrooms and a beverage station.
On the second floor- coming from the first staircase near the elevator- members enter by being greeted by a feature wall with the logo and a credenza. The staff working area is located to the right while the coworking spaces are located to the left. This floor also has a conference room, private offices, private enclaves one small washroom and open workstations that promote collaboration, socialization and focus work.
These renderings show various spaces throughout the coworking space: the event space, photography/ sound studio and the first floor reception/ coworking area. The concept is shown through elements such as wood beams, curtain walls, partition dividers, the acrylic ceiling installation, ceiling moulding and wall moulding.
For the material selection acoustic and antimicrobial materials were chosen. This included materials such as polyester for the upholstery, porcelain stone for backsplash/ countertops, as well as LVT for the flooring. For acoustics, carpet tile and acoustic wood panels were chosen- with LVT and upholstery also being chosen to control acoustics. Acoustics were especially important in the photography/ sound studio. This was done through sound absorbing panels, sound diffusing panels, bass traps, acoustical ceiling panels, acoustic paint, vinyl tile flooring and soundproofing the walls with a soundproof membrane.
This video shows how the concept went from conceptual exploration to conceptual development; how it was initially explored and implemented it into the space.
