Angelica Gaudia

With an enthusiasm for forward-thinking design, Angelica explored a Net-Zero Innovation Centre for her thesis project. It considers design principles and building systems that minimize carbon footprints. According to an academic study, the public do not consider environmental issues to be significant, and as a result, they do not seek further knowledge on the subject. The thesis project is designed to provide a central space for learning and understanding the tools that will support a net-zero economy. Angelica's passion for innovative design and human well-being has influenced her thesis project.

Project Overview

Net-zero Innovation Centre aims to exhibit and educate to the public about net-zero concepts and sustainable ways of living. Daily human activities produces carbon emissions that are trapped into out atmosphere causing global warming and climate change. According to Thomas (2013), the general population is unconcerned about environmental challenges because they lack information about the topic. New and innovative approaches to zero-carbon are emerging, thus creating the need to raise awareness among the public about sustainable ways of living and net-zero strategies.

Concept/Design Process

Each individual has a responsibility to protect the environment. The concept of Rhythm represents the community working together to develop better ways to live and mitigate carbon emissions. As explored through the parti diagrams I have developed Rhythm that represents connecting with the community, spreading awareness, defining solutions, and creating a unifying movement.

Site Plan/Floor Plan(s)

The program of my project includes three main categories which are exhibition, education, and collaborative spaces. All of these elements contribute to the understanding of how our lifestyles impact our climate and what tools and strategies people can use to minimize carbon footprint. The project is located in 21 Ossington avenue, where the area is dominated by the working age demographic. Based on a study Millennials and Generation X have an increasing interest for more sustainable ways of living.

Sections/Elevations

The section shows the cylinder slats are positioned at different height levels which represent the concept of a rhythmic flow, and follows the structure of the staircase.

3D Views

The townhall event space is the central area of the innovation centre. It creates a flexible space for people to sit, work, or socialize. It also functions as a gathering space for seminars and for guest speakers. The main architectural feature consist of the bamboo cylinder slats that is used as a wall to ceiling element. There are display podiums that exhibit materials or technologies that support a sustainable living. There are display touch screens integrated into the podiums, which allow visitors to absorb information and promote tactile learning. The Materials Gallery include interactive display screens to support tactile learning. This creates a dynamic environment for visitors to absorb information. The gallery include shelves holding sustainable materials that help minimize carbon footprint.
