This project is located at 2444 Eglinton East in Scarborough. The concept of the design is "The Family Tree" which fosters feelings of connection and community engagement. The project is a sustainable, affordable and standardized multi-family complex comprised of 40' and 45' shipping
containers.
The design uses biophilic principles of indoor-outdoor connections which also extend to a community garden where residents can harvest their own food. Each grouping or "Tree" consists of 14 units where a central deck connects the entrances with a tree in the middle. Each unit consists of 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a private 2nd level balcony. The main level is inspired by the soil and the trunk of a tree, while the upper level promotes feelings of growth and freshness.
Exterior main entrance of stacked units. The units consist of one 40' and one 45' shipping container, painted green. There is a tree in the center of the public deck.
The second level was designed to feel rejuvenating, fresh and lively. Inspired by the leaves of the tree, this space encourages growth.
Main level bedroom was inspired by the trunk and soil of the “Family Tree.” This room is meant to make users feel comfortable and relaxed.
