Kerina Duarte

Kerina enjoys Corporate, Hospitality and Commercial design as the creativity is endless. She enjoys being challenged and pushed when working. Designing for multiple clients who are using the space at once is challenging but also rewarding once the project is complete. She works well alone, but excels when working with a team of people as ideas are always flowing when in a group. She is very outgoing so collaborative work is always preferred.

Project Overview

Kerina designed a collaborative hub for interior designers, architects and retailers within the industry. This will give them an office space to work that allows safe collaboration in a post-covid world. It will also give them a chance to interact with others in the industry and will give them an opportunity to leave their homes to do their work. She will be designing this building to remove the disconnect caused by covid-19 and try to bring everyone safely back together into the workplace. She will do so by incorporating flexible enclosures, enforcing physical distancing within the design, easy configuration within spaces and by implementing covid-safe materials that are easy to clean.

Concept/Design Process

My concept for this design is creating enclosures. I was inspired by the initial open-concept layout of the building and also the post-and-beam construction. I wanted to find a way to create enclosures while also being able to have a flexible space. My idea for the diagrams mainly came from the post and beam construction and I wanted to incorporate that design within my enclosures since I would have to make my enclosures work with the columns. The first 3 rows here were my initial ideas for my enclosures and the last row is what was used within my design. The majority of my enclosures will be made by DIRTT (which is the company called doing it right the first time). They create modular partitions that are easy to remove and configure depending on the users using the space. They do this by using a system that allows the partitions to clip to the floor and ceiling easily. DIRTT is also sustainable & they produce little to no waste which is also why I wanted to use them in my design.

Site Plan/Floor Plans

This building will consist of 2 floors that will be designed to be same and serve the same purpose. Both floors will allow for collaborative working areas and a showroom space to showcase supplier products. The only difference being that the first floor will be used for showing residential materials, lighting and furniture. The second floor will be used to showcase commercial products. The showroom will be located facing Ossington ave so that people passing by can easily see what product is being showcased and can decide to stop by. Work stations are located towards the back of the building to separate the visitors from the people who are renting out the space to work.

3D Views

The renders chosen will be showcasing the sample library, showroom and workstations within this space. The sample library will give designers and architects a chance to choose between physical samples or virtual samples as everyone has their own preference when sourcing. The showroom will allow retailers within the industry to showcase their new products and keep designers up to date with the latest trends. This workstation allows the users to alternate between sit & stand working. It also includes dividers that are high enough for privacy and also low enough to allow collaboration.
