Jessica is a passionate designer who prides herself on creating built environments that are functional, purposeful and innovative. Project Overview

Sustainability has become the forefront of design projects due to the impending environmental concerns of the 21st century. However, there is a gap in understanding the true practice of what it means to be sustainable. Grounding yourself in sustainable practice signals your role in sustainable innovation. This suggests going beyond solving problems with solutions and instead, solving a worldly problem by designing spaces that influence the development of local environments. The student has researched and designed a built environment that embodies social sustainability through the use of sustainable initiatives, transparency and adaptability in design for the Toronto Brewing Company.

Project Toronto brewing Co. can achieve social sustainable innovation through three key concepts: sustainability, transparency in design and adaptability of spaces.

The utility of separate floor concepts allows for patrons to choose their type of experience, comfort level or visit reason. Encouraging return. Increasing the influence.

Concept/Design Process

The urgent need for sustainably innovative environments is on the rise as the health of our planet quickly diminishes. With the lack of global citizens on board for sustainability, urges the need for built environments to be more sustainably influential through smart design. With the help of the Toronto Brewing Co. the student was able to design a built environment that influences and inspires the local community, tourists and readers to be more sustainable. The big idea in the design was to provide an attractive environment for citizens to visit and experience the initiatives at work, through experiential education and transparency in design. Whether you are a local ‘usual’ customer at the Toronto Brewing Co. or someone new, the hope is to influence as many people as possible. Influence through experience. Influence through repetitive exposure. Influence through readily available smart sustainable choices. This is social sustainability.

Site Plan/Floor Plans

The student chose the site of 21 Ossington Avenue in downtown Toronto, Ontario. This building is located in a prosperous area full of rich history and strong neighborhood pride. It is in a prime entertainment district of Toronto, therefore it will receive a lot of local and international traffic. Various transit opportunities are right outside of the door and there is parking access at the rear of the site. The local area is full of homes and small condos, as well as many successful local establishments. As they say “if businesses are thriving around you, you too will see success”. The brewery however is housed in a two storey brick and truss structure that has the adaptability to entertain a rooftop level. Therefore, the business will be divided by three main purposes; (1) the biergarten, retail and manufacturing (2) the restaurant and offices, and (3) the seasonal rooftop.

Overall the concept design for the Toronto Brewing Company achieved success according to the student’s hypothesis, stating that “microbreweries can be fully self-sustaining if the framework is based on the LEED certification requirements. The requirements shall provide sustainable solutions that can influence the user experience through the use of transparent education and societal innovation. Utilizing the three pillars of sustainability; sustainability, transparency and adaptability in design can create influential environments. All of which can be illustrated through the following renderings of the concept space. Within the renders you will notice natural earth tones and soft metals; all are locally produced or refurbished sources. There are many glass partitions for natural light and the neutral space allows for the sustainable features and branding to stand out.
