Project Overview

A design derived from researching the trends affecting future hotel design, the Avenue Hotel is a boutique hotel located at 21 Ossington Avenue in Toronto, in the trendy, up and coming neighbourhood of Trinity Bellwoods. The hotel is an independent 4-star hotel catering to tourists and locals. Keeping the local travel experience going throughout the guest’s stay, the hotel will have a strong connection to the local community through the incorporation of local artist’s work, local music, local restaurants, and businesses, striving to create a unique experience for the user.

Concept/Design Process

The concept, the Avenue, derived from the two definitions of the word avenue, one being; a street lined with trees on either side (Merriam-Webster, para 3, n.d.), the other being a way of pursuing something (Merriam-Webster, para 2, n.d.), is shown in the spatial layout consisting of a long central area (avenue) lined with columns on either side representing trees, with spaces branching off from the avenue. Guests are given the experience of strolling along, under a canopy of trees. The hotel will have self-serve options as well as hotel staff assistance so that guests can choose the method or avenue that best suits them.

Site Plan/Floor Plans

The location at 21 Ossington Avenue features walking distance to the downtown core, guest parking, accessibility to public transit and is in a vibrant community with many shops and restaurants nearby. The area consists of a mixture of residential and commercial buildings with a combination of older and newer design. The layout of the ground floor consists of the hotel’s amenities and administrative offices. The main area of the ground level is the long central avenue consisting of a central lounge with the main spaces branching off from it. There is an interconnected floor space spanning the central avenue space with a skylight above. The second level consists of the upper lounge, tourist information centre and guest rooms. There are eleven guest rooms in total, two are fully accessible. Each guest room is incorporated with a workout space and some free weights and exercise equipment.

3D Views

The 3-D views have been selected to showcase the key areas of the hotel. The hanging green, glass tubes shown over the central avenue represent the tree canopy. The concept of an avenue is shown through the columns lining the central avenue on either side, the lighting, and the use of natural looking materials and colours. The incorporation of biophilic design elements bring the outdoors in. Incorporating the mixture of older and newer building elements, the hotel will have a strong connection to the local community through the display of artist’s work and historic photos of the neighbourhood in the restaurant, along second floor hallways, and in the guest rooms. The use of modern design elements and older elements, as well as bright colours and sculptural lighting and furniture reflects the artistic character of the neighbourhood.
