Throughout my five years of design education, I have learned several skills from hand drafting to digital drafting on various software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Sketchup. My passion for hospitality design allowed me to combine my creativity and passion together by incorporating both mindful personal and professional design aspects. My thesis study focused on integrating permanent COVID-19 design approaches in a boutique hotel which was designed through a balanced use of interactive contactless amenities, antimicrobial & antibacterial materials.

Project Overview

The Connex Boutique Hotel was designed to help limit the spread of viral transmittable diseases. The thesis topic was inspired by the global pandemic COVID-19. COVID-19 has affected a lot of businesses and even though companies are adjusting by implementing temporary sanitizing and distancing measures in place, I believe that implementing touchless amenities to create a contactless design environment will not only better employees or guests of hotels but architecturally and spatially adapt to our new way of life. It is important to integrate technology with your design rather than integrate it as an afterthought.

Connectivity in an environment focuses on the relationship how people move through the space.

Concept/Design Process

The boutique hotel Connex is supported by the concept of connectivity because it connects guests/users through the use of mechanical devices to limit the spread of viral transmissible diseases, through an integrated contactless space that is connected with touchless amenities such as voice control and touchless activated systems. Connectivity through the Connex hotel smartphone app will create a direct connection between guests and the hotel staff by being more personal and improve the user experience where guests can find relevant information in the app.

Site Plan/Floor Plans

The building I chose is 415 Eastern Avenue this building is 16,790 sq ft and it is located in the east area of Toronto’s downtown core, known as East Harbour. I chose this building as my hospitality project because the new development of the East Harbour project will create a new vibrant community to the eastern commercial core which will be a centre for art, commerce, and healthy living. This boutique hotel would be a great addition as it will be a unique mix of office, retail, and entertainment & cultural spaces with a new transit hub. The ground level organizes the guests with a balanced level of human interaction and technology. The third level houses the 10 hotel rooms it has 3 suites, 1 being an accessible suite. The hotel apps for the rooms allow guests to control the thermostat, control lighting, gain entry access, and as well as control the smart tv.

These views show how guests will interact within different spaces through the use of mechanical devices, interactive amenities, antimicrobial & antibacterial materials. The hotel apps for the rooms allow guests to control the thermostat, control lighting, entry access, and as well as control the smart tv. Public spaces such as the lobby and lounge feature a balanced level of human interaction and technology in which guests can choose to interact with whichever service they are comfortable with.
