I came into the Bachelor of Interior Design program equipped with several years of experience; working across the interior design, logistics and customer service industries. My design style leans towards minimal, sustainable, and contemporary designs. I believe in Frank Lloyd Wright’s ideology that spaces needs to be more fluid, more open, more livable, and less restrained. This thesis project design did not just ADAPT to the new normal, but was created to influence the paradigm shift in the interior design of Hotels!

Project Overview

Carbonscape Hotels is a contemporary space that showcases high tech and sustainable interior design of hotels post covid-19. It also exhibits the socio-cultural shift in design of hotels. It will be a space that serves as an escape from the city life to de-stress. In short, Carbonscape hotels is an embodiment of a seamless hospitality experience.

Octagonal grid.

Concept/Design Process

Explored how grid pattern, an element of design is used to create connections between the Interior and the Exterior. Grid was chosen as it is a visible form of the thesis building. Experimented with clustered, linear, adjacent and interlocking forms of grid. The rectilinear grid of the structure was rotated to create a strong octagonal form.

Floor Plans

The first-floor plan exhibits the rectilinear octagonal grid derived from the concept. The space shows how an indoor space can have the outdoor feel through the vertical openings of the building. The central and south sides of the building is the public space which includes the check-in, lobby, café/workspaces, servery, bar and fine dining areas. The Administration areas are on the east end of the building. Whilst the west hosts predominantly the restrooms which is in close proximity to the public spaces. And finally, the backroom areas are on the north end of the building. On the second floor are the suites and the workspace areas.

Sections/Elevations

It shows how through the skylight, and openings allows daylighting into the public spaces. Also, it reflects the lighting strategy and how it relates to the users.

3D Views

The 3d views shows the feel of the sleek contemporary environment that relates to the local environment. It also puts on display the application of some of the materials as shown. The lobby also shows the bottom end of the concept – the Rectilinear octagon grid in 3 dimensions at different heights of the building. The Bar/Fine Dining area shows how much of natural lights is brought into the space during the day The shelf also reflects the grid pattern. The vertical walls on the south of the building were glazed, like the elevator and the wine cellar, this is to allow for more openness. The night view shows how the rectangular basket like architectural lighting which is dimmable, replaces the daylighting at evening times.

And finally, leveraging Internet of Things to facilitate the contactless user experience, from the check-in consoles, to the smart ordering system via QR codes and smart room systems where at the touch of a button on the phone, everything can be controlled!
