I have always had an interest in art and design. I grew up appreciating architecture and its forms, and from there I began developing a strong passion for interior design. My goal and ambition are to create meaningful and innovative designs to showcase a true work of art.
Due to the vast diversity of post-secondary students, institutions have not been able to provide an effective wellness facility that attends to each student's needs. Through research and data analysis, conclusions were made to finalize an evidence-based design of a wellness retreat facility dedicated to the demographic of post-secondary students in Ontario.
Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier said, “Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms”. The spatial experience will begin to explore the idea of light and shadow. The concept will tie into the theory of prospect and refuge; where light will represent prospect and shadow will represent refuge. Light and its connectivity to shadow establish the limits of spatiality. Light already serves a strong purpose which allows us to see and appreciate what is in front of us; however, it also illuminates a work of art that we can respect.
The heritage building is location in Alton, Ontario; a rural town situated away from major cities. The Alton Mill consists of 2 floors and a basement. The surrounding neighbourhood is calm and peaceful which makes it a perfect location for a wellness retreat. Each floor is designed to accommodate different zoning types and spaces.
The first level is dedicated to introducing the purpose of the space. The design reflects the concept prominently as this is the first impression users will get when they enter the space. The second level is focused on refuge and rejuvenation, and so this is where the maximum amount of privacy is dedicated to. The basement level is the most social zone where the community will come together throughout their experience at the retreat.
The design of the retreat will be interconnected with a central atrium. This atrium will connect the first, second, and basement levels; the glass structure will bring in a maximum amount of daylight into the space. With that, the materials and finishes, as well as the incorporation of natural elements will enhance the lightness and soft atmosphere of the space.
The final design of the retreat is based on the needs of what students expect to see in the new contemporary space. Upon entering the space, you are open to the new contemporary structural addition. Throughout the retreat, there is a strong incorporation of nature and daylight to offer the most amount of comfort and safety. The ideal design focus was to ensure that all the materials and finishes compliment each other and collectively promote wellness and beauty.
