Huyen has always been passionate about interior design and wanted to explore different design sectors to improve design skills and experience. She aims for human-centered design and nature - human connections in the interior environment, to create functional and aesthetic environment. for the thesis project, she works on a farm-to-table culinary center, a complex type of building that has a restaurant, culinary labs and a grocery store to educate the guests about food security, local consumption and farm-to-table cooking practices through the journey of dining, learning and shopping. This project allows her to practice and expand her design knowledge and skills in the final year.
Farm-2-table culinary center is a complex building containing a restaurant, culinary labs and a grocery store, with an aim of educating the guests about farm-to-table cooking practices and promoting local food consumption. Multi-sensory experience, nature connections and immersive experience are integrated into the design to bring a sense farm-to-table approach and nature in the space to encourage engagement and users' experience.
MULTI-SENSORY spatial quality will be brought into the space to immerse the guests into the experience through sensorial design elements and structure. The motions of sensory will be explored by diagramming to inform spatial experience and design elements. Simulations will also be applied into the space through textures of materials and finishes, with strong celebration of natural materials and elements and visual simulation created by digital project mapping and sensors.
The site is located in 3120 Lakeshore Boulevard West. The building consists of 1 floor and 1 mezzanine. The ground floor includes all the essential areas while the mezzanine includes staff area only. The experiential journey through the entire space building is indicated on the floor plan. Skylights along the corridors create exterior - interior connections and enhance the multi-sensory experience.
Sections below illustrate the relationships among key spaces.
These views highlight the integration of multi-sensory experience through textures, connections with the exteriors through skylights and materials that mimic or reflect nature. The digital walls wrap around the event space create a sense of being surrounded by a spectacular view. The sample walls along the corridors guide the guests through the space to the grocery store, while announcing the products they can find in the stores. The partial-height screens, mirror finish ceiling and water ripple effect ceilings in the restaurant area establish multi-sensory experience through textures of these materials, the transparency through the screens and the reflection of the ceiling that capture the dining moments.
