Over the Summer of 2017, I volunteered to help Arkana Peru design Tambos for their Peruvian Amazon Rainforest campus. Tambos are stilted structures, also referred to as tree houses. The group of seven student designers met once a week over July to discuss and develop designs. Early August, we flew to Peru to continue our design exploration. Our time in Peru was spent between Lima and Pucallpa. From Pucallpa, we departed on our trek into the Amazon. We spent four days at Santuario Rehabilitation, located next to the Arkana Peru campus. We had the task of choosing where the Tambos would reside and ended up selecting a flatter portion of the hill that made up the campus. This area allowed a view of the hot springs that were at the bottom of the mountain. The remainder of the trip was dedicated to developing our designs and exploring. Once back in Toronto, we had a few meetings before handing in our drawings, which included a site plan, plans of the Tambos, and elevations. An opportunity to visit and explore a truly amazing country and apply skills gained over my first two years at Humber is an experience I will not forget.
