Over the past 4 years, industrial design has allowed me to broaden my horizon with my design process and allow me to learn new skills and gain experience in multiple industries such as footwear, automotive design and UX design. I believe that the best approach to creating a great product is through the use of collaboration. My favourite thing about industrial design is that designs are open-ended, there are various possibilities for a problem that can be expressed and explored. I cannot wait to continue with my design endeavour.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
Maverick provides urban food couriers with access to rentable electric bikes and public facilities for their basic needs in areas that currently lack them.
It is a comprehensive system that is widely available around the urban area and provides a safe location for which they could rest in-between work hours.
Maverick features a hub that is designed primarily for the high pace nature where it allows for the users to reserve the bikes ahead of schedule through the phone, or at the kiosk.
The rental hub is designed so that the features enhance the courier’s ability to perform on the job such as from lockers to store their valuables, to hydration with a convenient bottle re-filler.
Maverick is designed around features that focus on the ergonomics and human factors to ensure that it is optimal in terms of functionality and safety.
Some of the features include the shelter structure, the restroom and foldable thermal box. The components are designed to ensure that they can fulfill ergonomic needs between the 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male.
During the design process, sustainable solutions were taken into consideration for Maverick to ensure that the material is sustainable, and to try and reduce carbon footprint during the manufacturing process to its end of life.
Large solar panels generate electricity onsite which reduces the need for electricity from non-renewable sources. Extensive use of cleaner manufacturing such as 3D printing of the bike frame reduces the need for energy-intensive manufacturing.
Food delivery in urban areas is a quickly growing industry and many restaurants rely on them to provide an essential service. However, food couriers often find themselves without support in a few key areas as the working condition. Many couriers find themselves will often find themselves loitering around businesses due to the lack of a dedicated space. Additionally, couriers are worried about the security of their equipment which could get stolen while they are out making their deliveries. Newer couriers, often have to rely on equipment they own but are not designed for food delivery, which may lead to ergonomic injuries down the road. Maverick is a comprehensive food delivery solution that is designed to address these issues and improve the experience of these workers.
