The journey begins with a girl named Joanne, growing up in the core of downtown Toronto with quite the imagination. An imagination so strong that it ultimately led to her love for sketching and doodling, especially on everything she owned. Building was her next passion. Living in a cramped townhouse, forced early stages of design thinking and creative thinking to either construct solutions or give another means of purpose to recyclables. She saved money and the environment. Now merge her entire journey then fast forward to today and now she is an Industrial Design graduate. As an Industrial Design graduate, I appreciate and admire the form, purpose and style of past, current and emerging products. I believe that good design is purposeful and functional. It tells a story with empathy and commits to problem solving, which in turn, can enhance human lifestyle. I strive to put that imagination into solutions and hopefully it benefits someone.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
MOBII is an adaptive smart stroller that mainly improves the experience for both parents and their baby when it comes to public diaper changing.
MOBII is power by electricity which can present features like a ridable scooter and a hands free mode for the active parent.
MOBII's bassinet sits on a 360º pivoting base, allowing users to change the direction the bassinet faces.
This allows user to change a diaper at any degrees. In addition, MOBII also includes a 180º pivoting scooter platform that uses gravity to lock itself in place. There is also the option for a hands-free mode. MOBII will connect to the detachable handheld remote integrated into the handle via bluetooth connection. The remote acts as an invisible tether as well as, steers MOBII around anything in its path.
Without a proper change station, changing a diaper can be very strenuous on the body.
With the design of MOBII, a 360º pivoting base and additional tilting from the support arms, allows users to quickly and easily adjust the bassinet to their direction and angle of choice when changing a diaper. Handles are also adjustable to fit the user.
MOBII uses reusable and recycled materials to make a strong and safe stroller.
Using materials like aluminum mixed with carbon fiber is a good strong and light material for the frame of the stroller. Also, considering methods like vacuum forming the outer layer of the bassinet can aid in the production of that part.
As society continues to develop and be more accepting to changes in our social norms, many parents are starting to realize that there is a major problem with the lack of change tables found not only in public washrooms but in men’s washrooms, especially. As of today, there have been more change tables installed into men’s washrooms however, it’s still not a requirement, making it a continuing struggle for parents. Even with the availability of a change table, there still lies the issue of cleanliness in the environment. There is a risk of exposing the baby to germs and bacteria that have collected over time on the surface of a public change table or any public surface for that matter. Nonetheless, whether it be a mother, father, stay-at-home parent, single parent or same-sex parent, the complications that arise from changing a child’s diaper in public are all too similar. The topic definition presents an opportunity to improve a situation that almost everyone will go through.
