My name is Nicolas Munoz. I am originally from Panama but have been living in Ontario since 2009. On my spare time I enjoy exploring trails, mountain biking and photography. I have come to appreciate the design of products and vehicles after being immersed with the design principles within this program. I look forward to improving my skills that I have attained so far.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
Skaði provides physically challenged users with the ability to continue their independence by not having to rely on the lack of public transportation in rural communities.
They can choose where to go at anytime.
Users can enter the mobility vehicle from the rear.
If they are carrying small groceries or other items, they can store them in the front trunk.
Upon entering the mobility vehicle, the user has the ability to choose which joystick to operate to move the vehicle.
This decision was made for those users who may not have a fully functioning hand.
Skaði is a fully electric mobility vehicle that is equipped with a 200kWh battery which can provide up to 721kilometers of range.
The interior is made out of recycled abs plastic and fsc reclaimed wood material. Furthermore, the users wheelchair will be secured by the wheels.
Currently, the physically challenged, face not only winter conditions but seven other types of barriers within their lives (social, physical, attitudinal, communication, policy, programmatic, and transportation barriers). They are dependent on mobility devices to get them from point A to B. Every year, Canadians may encounter black ice when they least expect it. According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, there were 9,000 hospitalizations due to falls on ice in Canada between 2016-2017, making them the number-one cause of sport or winter injuries. Therefore, black ice can pose a danger also for the physically challenged. They must deal with staying warm by dressing accordingly for the weather. They also need to stay dry to avoid frostbites and hypothermia. All while being alert of their surroundings.
