My name is Han Yang, “Never give up” is a motto my dad taught me from a young age when facing adversity, I always use this motto applying it to my work and studies. It helps me overcome challenges that come my way and encourages me to move forward. A future in industrial design is what I work towards and look forward to. Empathizing with people and learning from humans is what I value most in this field, and so I look forward to learning more as I continue beyond my studies.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
Stratus aims to elevate the independence of a person with obesity when their caregiver is absent and encourages the user to go outside for promoting rehabilitation.
With several clients per day, 15-45 mins per session, Stratus reduces the mental and physical stress experienced by PSWs.
The Stratus wheelchair is height adjustable and can be tilted accordingly.
It can be used in three different positions to increase mobility within their space. All features on the Stratus follow the essential needs of a PSW's caring routine. The over-hanging mechanical lift aids in a smooth transition for an easier care experience and allows better facilitating of a commode toilet. All other tools are within arm's reach and minimizes movement within their care routine.
The Stratus is equipped with the essential equipment needed for routine care of the obese client.
The mechanical lift allows the PSW to comfortably reach and safely lift the client. The space around Straus accommodates a variety of movements for the PSW, and the bed-rail is within arms-reach for the person with obesity. All the tools are designed to be ergonomic and practically laid out, this offers optimal and efficient space for the PSW.
Steel is used within the inner structure to achieve a strong and stable design.
Aluminum is used for most surfaces and touchpoints, it is lightweight, versatile in colour, and recyclable. Natural latex is used in Stratus' cushion, it has great breathability for the users and is biodegradable. After use, the user is able to donate their Stratus back to where they purchased it or to a community service facility for re-purposing.
Healthcare providers play an essential role in Canadian society. The duties of a personal support worker (PSW) are to help care for those who are ill, elderly, or need extra support in completing daily tasks. Therefore, it is vital to keep healthcare providers safe and reduce the chance of getting injured in their workplace. 1 in 4 Canadian adults is obese and may require future medical support. More importantly, people who experience immobilization from obesity with ageing require extra care from healthcare providers. This work environment increases the risk of physical injuries and decreases mental health for those with obesity. This thesis proposes an in-depth study of PSW’s challenges when caring for a person with obesity and empathizing with them to discover a solution that enhances their independence.
