Timothy Entin

Hello, I am Timothy Entin and I am an Industrial Design graduate living in Toronto. From the age of 12 I've begun garnering an admiration of Industrial Design without knowing that this interest would later become a legitimate career option. This all started with a class project to design a device for Apple, even as a twelve year old I knew I wanted to pursue designing from that moment onwards. All of my class notebooks were filled with product drawings, I couldn’t stop drawing and although I was asked to stop drawing in my notebooks and projects, I never stopped.

Ever since joining the Industrial Design program I’ve learned to appreciate my own design fundamentals and to understand how to utilize these ideologies in my designs. I’ve discovered my love for footwear and automotive design, and how to pursue these fields with my own style. Throughout the years of this program I’ve taken steps to improve myself consistently and showcase my true ability and creative thinking. From being a runner up to the finalist in the APMA competition, nearly starting a masterclass at Pensole ( which was postponed due to Covid-19), I’m extremely glad the direction my career is going to take me, and the steps I’ve taken to be able to achieve all that I have up to date.

The Four Essential Pillars for Design Excellence

The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.

Enhancement of Human Lifestyle

Montaro utilizes its rear driven power train to offer instantaneous torque to the operator.

Montaro also utilizes a tread system to allow for quick and agile control of the vehicle, this gives the Montaro the ability to turn on a dime and maintain efficient traction on all terrain around a construction site. Montaro ensures the operator can use this vehicle for as many different jobs, such as lifting many different sized objects, with its interchangeable forks it is capable of lifting whatever it finds fit. Montaro also has towing capabilities, being able to fit a standard trailer to the back of the vehicle. The addition of a LED display on the outside of the vehicle allows for the communication of various information such as battery life, angle of incline and weight threshold to be communicated to the workers outside of the vehicle.

Human-Interaction & User-Centric Design

Montaro satisfies human touch points all throughout the vehicle, from the ingress and egress being a three touch point system, all the way to the interior which ensures a three touch point system as well.

The exterior has accounted for the workers being able to adjust all vehicle parameters easily with minimal effort, such as the change of the forks and attachment of the trailer. The interior ensures the user is comfortably seated in a position to be able to operate the vehicle. The standing seat makes it possible for the use of hand controls, the use of feet in a standing seat may be difficult, as well as adds unnecessary movement. The utilization of mass tuned dampers in the seat and control panel allow for comfort across all terrains.

Ergonomics & Human Factors Design

Modern day construction equipment utilizes a three touch point system for ingress and egress, this allows the operator to safely get in and out the vehicle.

Montaro has two handles and a step to allow an operator of any size to enter and exit safely. A rotating, distance and height adjustable standing seat allows for the user to comfortably take a seat and get into position to use the control panel. The control panel is placed at an ergonomic angle to allow for all users to be able to comfortably use the joysticks. The control panel also features a height adjustment, to allow for all sizes to be able to use the vehicle comfortably.

Sustainability & Social Responsibility

Montaro is a unique sustainable solution to construction equipment, offering a near zero emissions solution to the construction industry.

Montaro uses lithium ion batteries instead of the traditional internal combustion engine, and two electric motors in the rear of the vehicle. This power train uses a high density battery to ensure there is an instantaneous torque available to the operator at all times.

MONTARO - MSD Solution for Construction Equipment

Project Statement

Montaro is a mitigation method for musculoskeletal disorders, a piece of equipment that put measures into place to ensure construction workers will not have to put themselves in harm’s way when completing tasks that they inflame an MSDs. The construction industry reports many injuries, however in Ontario over 40% of reported injuries were MSD related. Another source of injuries was the ingress egress, according to the WSN 359 cases of injuries, 32% the users foot slipped, 6% missed a step and 6% Lost hand grip. Environmental factors were noted for 11% of all incidents and wet, icy, and muddy conditions were only indicated for less than 4% of the incidents. These injuries are contributed to poor design and a lack of consideration of human ergonomics. Using modern safety standards along with advice from a Project Coordinator from PCL construction a variety of modern safety piece were included to always protect the operator. Montaro is a unique take on construction equipment not currently seen in the industry. The unique design and take on the mitigation methods and agile movement provides efficiency throughout the workday. The electric powertrain provides instantaneous torque to the tread providing excellent traction and movement on any terrain found on a construction site. The MSD mitigation methods offer strain free use of the vehicle for prolonged use, this allows for more work to be done throughout the day and avoiding time needed to switch drivers; it is not uncommon for the operators to switch out very often because of risks such as vibrations, so the Montaro simply uses mass tuned dampers to mitigate this problem.
