My name is Stephen Bykowy, I am an industrial design graduate from Toronto, Ontario. A creative nerd by nature, my background is in art and music. I love capturing the form and function of the world and environment around us and building it into cool, progressive and practical designs for products. Great, inspired designs make life beautiful.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
HORIZON uses modern electric vehicle technology to expand the interior space and create an environment that is more livable for long-haul truck drivers.
By expanding the interior, HORIZON has more space to implement the amenities needed to live a healthy/active lifestyle while on the road. These amenities will provide the driver with better ergonomic support while driving for long periods of time, promote healthier eating habits, and provide the means for proper exercise.
HORIZON incorporates full-body interaction design methods to meet the needs of long-haul truck drivers.
The cockpit addresses the issues of prolonged sitting by providing an optional standing-seat orientation, which provides support for the lumbar, shoulder and thigh touchpoints. The living quarters consider the whole-body experience by creating an environment that is comfortable and functional. The living quarters includes a kitchenette, two-in-one washroom, bunk bed, treadmill, and plenty of storage space.
HORIZON was designed from the inside out by using precise human sizing and mechanics to create the floor layout, and size of its features.
The interior features are large enough to be easily used by women and men of virtually any size, while being compact enough to not be obtrusive. HORIZON provides the ergonomic support needed for drivers to stay healthy, such that they can perform their jobs to the best of their abilities.
HORIZON is an electric semi-truck that does not emit any diesel fumes into the atmosphere.
The use of sustainable materials like mycelium, vegan leather and bamboo minimizes the use of harsh plastics while creating a natural and homier feel to the interior space.
The long-haul truck transportation industry is a crucial part of the global economy, providing essential goods to consumers in every country and locale around the world. The shipment of cargo by truck requires drivers to spend days or weeks on the road at a time. Their work environment and the driver’s tasks can often cause serious health problems, resulting in high turnover rates and retraining costs across the industry. A lack of ergonomic innovation coupled with the repetitive nature of the job, lack of proper amenities and social isolation puts drivers at heightened risk of cardiometabolic diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, as well as anxiety and depression. HORIZON is an enhanced sleeper semi-truck designed to address these issues and improve the quality of life of truck drivers.
