Hello, my name is Mackenzie O’Mahony, I am 23 and currently living in Newmarket, Ontario. I have always been intrigued by a creative lifestyle mindset, whether that be through design, art, photography, or videography, I have always had a passion for creating. I take great pride in my work and always approach my task at hand with great effort and attention to detail in order to produce quality products/outcomes. Having completed four years from Humber’s Industrial Design program, I find myself currently utilizing my design techniques and skills towards my recently launched lifestyle clothing brand "Nine7". Ultimately, design has taught me a lot throughout my life, and I am excited to continuously learn and see what it holds in the future for me.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
Throughout rural communities people struggle every winter with transportation for many different reasons.
This proposed thesis product with help individuals be able to travel short distances, ultimately aiding them and enhancing/benefitting their lifestyle. Through research and data collecting, the major pain points that occur during the winter months were targeted in order to ensure a product that solved these issues.
It was very important to be mindful of the lifestyles these individuals live, as they can be much different than urban living.
By taking into consideration the daily tasks and activities these certain individuals do was a big factor in the overall design. Through research and conducting surveys, there were certain design features that were implemented into the vehicle to ensure a positive human interaction experience and user focused design.
Using many different resources, certain ergonomics were established for both the interior and exterior of this vehicle.
Through many iterations of design and measurement changes, the vehicle is suitable for ranges between 95% male and 5% female. This was very important due to the wide range of individuals potentially using the product.
Sustainability is very important in design today.
It is our job as designers to ensure our products are as sustainable and economically friendly as possible to help our environment. There are many different aspects in this design that allow for the vehicle to be as sustainable and eco friendly as possible. Some headlining features in this design include: attachable solar panels, battery powered motors, eco-friendly LED lighting, and repurposed interior materials.
As winter months approach, the environment poses challenges to individuals residing in rural areas susceptible to large snowfalls regarding transportation and safety in their communities. For many reasons, adverse weather and road conditions are a highly considerable cause for elevated risks related to accidents and fatalities amongst drivers. Certain major risks for these rural communities are: lack of road maintenance, inadequate lighting conditions, and lack of transportation options as public transport services can hardly be efficient under such conditions. User research including interviews, observational studies, and analyses of statistical data was completed to give detail and justification for the design process. Additionally, with reference to current transportation vehicles, one to one and scaled models were created to better understand the full design. Overall This solution will enhance the safety and lifestyle of individuals travelling through rural areas during the winter months.
This video will show the critical issues that rural communities have throughout winter months, along with intriguing statistics to support the overall problem that needs to be solved. The video with also provide a quick, confined walkthrough of the winter vehicle posed to solve the problem.
