Logan Dohar

Hi! My name is Logan Dohar and I am an Industrial Design graduate living in Ottawa. I’ve always had interest in physical design since high school, but was unaware about the Industrial Design practice until attending an open house at Carleton University. Since then I’ve enjoyed sketching some science fiction. All kinds of products, I’m crazy for modular compact design. Having some work experience in a manufacturing environment has helped mold my perspective of the design as a whole. I aspire to create meaningful, long lasting products that help solve the many challenges we face.

The Four Essential Pillars for Design Excellence

The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.

Enhancement of Human Lifestyle

NURISH is a system of products designed for current food bank and agency institutions to better reach those facing food insecurity in the urban environments we live in.

By providing a modular system that is easy to implement, to learn, and with a focus on maximizing capacity potential, food banks are able to operate around a specially designed vehicle, improve daily transport capacity and meet increasing food bank dependence from clients and agencies.

Human-Interaction & User-Centric Design

NURISH satisfies the full-bodied human interaction design elements, with the inclusion of numerous touch points into the design.

In practice, the transport modules will experience the most interaction from different foodbank and agency institutions. Users utilizing the modules steering system interact in a standing position, using their hands, arms, legs and eyes, all working in coordination. Other users manually moving the contents of the module interact with their back, legs, arms and hands.

Ergonomics & Human Factors Design

NURISHs’ system of products work together to provide a human centered design approach based around the process of moving supply and the transition between its different recipients.

In this concept, steering based handle grips, and the ability to change overall height of the module and its ground clearance are all features that can be adjusted on the user. This also helps reduce the risk of repetitive box loading and unloading manually through the module interior.

Sustainability & Social Responsibility

NURISH as a whole is an electric modular transport system that is designed around social responsibility through its intent for improving current support for food banks and their respective agencies, institutions that are critical to those facing food insecurity.

NURISHs’ highly durable bioplastic construction can be easily maintained and replaced. In addition, the storage and wheeled module can be interchangeable from those in and outside the vehicle so the system remains functional despite potential breakdown.

Project Statement

Food insecurity is a prevalent issue around the world in our cities, and urban areas. It’s a damaging situation where almost anyone can fall into, and can be caused by political, financial, health, and other situational circumstances. It predominantly affects individuals, followed by families, children, and the elderly. The scope of this thesis is to create a transport solution that focuses on food banks and their distribution methods, as this is the most widely adopted solution to support those who currently experience food insecurity. How may we mitigate food insecurity in urban areas? This thesis required ergonomic observations, workplace visits and in-depth studies of daily processes and challenges that food banks and their distribution network face with an intent to maximize the positive impact on users and clients.
