I am a Caribbean Industrial Design student currently living in Toronto. My passion for design stems from a constant curiosity about how products and processes work. I believe that diversity and collaboration in design is the most efficient way to achieve the best results possible. I enjoy being presented with new challenges and experiences which I tend to approach with a positive yet critical mindset. Outside of work, I spend my time in the sun, trying new foods, and exploring new parts of the city.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
The United Nations considers access to potable water a human right. In helping Barbados to achieve water security, Wāv could positively impact the lifestyles of thousands of citizens.
The problem of water scarcity in Barbados is very large in scale, making systems design appear to be the obvious route to a solution.
However, Wāv approaches it on a human scale, focussing on what each citizen can do to play their part in making their country a better place to live.
Wāv has one area of focussed full-bodied human interaction, the removable capsules.
The interactions that the user has with them include lifting, carrying, and the fine motor interactions of disconnecting and reconnecting the capsules to and from the system. Each of these interactions has been carefully considered in the design.
Wāv considers sustainability in regards to its materiality, manufacturing process, energy source, and business model.
The product facilitates sustainable water generation by encouraging rainwater harvesting. Polyethylene is used for the materiality of the tank because it is food-safe, lightweight, recyclable, and affordable for the target user. Rotational moulding is used for its detail capabilities and one-piece manufacturing. The business model proposes that the product be manufactured at a local facility, using pre-existing materials and processes, and OEM plumbing components.
Currently, the Caribbean island of Barbados relies on groundwater, a resource that is completely overwhelmed with a growing population. Meanwhile, rainwater floods the streets and is diverted into the sea. Wāv is a modular water storage and management system whose purpose is to foster the adoption of rainwater harvesting as a primary water source for households, and subsequently to help to achieve water security in Barbados.
