Hello! My name is Shoshannah Meggie. I have a very artistic background. From a very young age, I gravitated towards art and design more than anything else. Being in the industrial design program has taught me so much about the world around and the way people interact with that world. If I'm not designing or creating a prototype of a product, you can find me making music, painting both digitally and on a physical canvas, sketching and rendering for fun, dabbing in photography, crocheting, and whatever else I can find to keep my brain and hands occupied with.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
The entire focus of ALVA is improving the wellbeing of those living with Alzheimer's disease.
It does this through it's many features which can all be tracked through a caregiver app. It has the ability to sense and counteract strong emotional responses, tell the user when they should seek a washroom, guide them through their house, and more.
Caregivers have their own personal needs
so it was important to create a product that made it easier for them to track and monitor their loved ones as well as enhance the care provided.
Alzheimer's affects millions of people all around the world.
All with unique body types. Therefore, it was critical to create a product that would be comfortable for whoever is wearing it.
Because of the affect the clothing industry has on the environment, it was important to prevent further waste being added to landfills.
That is why ALVA is made using organic and sustainable materials derived from plants as well as recycled materials.
As more individuals become diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, those diagnosed as well as their families will have to face the effects of the disease as it progresses. More specifically, effects to their day-to-day lives, general and social interactions, and their safety. Alzheimer's disease is a neurological disease that causes neurons in the affected individuals brain to die. As reported by the Alzheimer's Society of Canada, in the early stages, it becomes increasingly difficult for the affected individual to remember things. And as the disease accelerates, it then begins to affect their communication, behaviour, personality, and movement. Eventually, complications due to the disease results in the affect individual passing away. According to BrightFocus Foundation, there are currently 50 million people worldwide suffering from the disease in various stages. Alzheimer's affects a persons ability to communicate and understand their own physical sensations. Caregivers have limited energy and finances to support their loved ones. ALVA is able to improve affect individuals wellbeing as well as mitigate caregiver strain.
