Hi, I’m Mary-Beth and I’m passionate about many things. Through my secondary education, I began fusing my passion for art with technology. I started to grow a spark for design and the digital world, leading me to Industrial Design. I am proud to be in this career because it means I didn't settle for one interest. We are problem solvers, we are graphic designers, effective communicators, model makers, creative thinkers, artists, digital creators. I can capitalize on my multiple interests as an Industrial Designer in a specialization that inspires and produces for other curious people in the world.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
Contour is an innovative tattoo workstation solution utilizing unique technologies to enhance the workflow and comfort experience for tattoo artists and tattoo clients.
Contour focuses on relieving tattoo artists of work-related pain and introducing new ways to tattoo for increased workflow. Contour includes an ergonomically-adaptable bed that can be adjusted for each user to accommodate the various positions needed for tattooing.
Contour explores a new approach to tattooing that can alleviate back and neck pain with added benefits.
The reference screen is available to give tattoo artists the option to look up, alleviating the pain of leaning forward. The screen can also view the tattoo session length, provide light, preview stencils on the body, and record for social media. This system comes with a phone app to wirelessly control the adjustments of all the products.
Ergonomic adjustment was crucial to the design of Contour, ensuring that support is available where needed during these long tattoo sessions.
To ensure a comfortable experience for everyone, Contour is designed to adjust in height, length, and/or angle where necessary for users between the 5th percentile woman and 95th percentile man. A key feature is the chainmail mesh, which uses controlled air in pockets to contract and expand for varying degrees of support.
Contour uses a variety of sustainable and recycled or recyclable materials where possible, including anodized recycled aluminum.
All metal components of Contour are made of anodized recycled aluminum and the plastic components of the bases are made of recyclable HDPE. The chainmail mesh is recyclable 3D-printed silicone wrapped with medical-grade clear silicone plastic for sterile cleaning. Other materials include biodegradable coir (coconut fibre) filling the inside of the headrest and lumbar support cushions.
Tattoo artists are an understudied group of professionals that conduct precise and permanent procedures made possible by their ability to work in their niche environment. Tattooing has been a practice for thousands of years but has become more mainstream in the 1970s. Still, as the growth in this industry continues to rise, ergonomic considerations, tattoo furniture, technology, and equipment have had considerably less evolution to keep pace with their users. Tattoo artists experience musculoskeletal pain from sitting in intense, awkward, and leaning postures for 8 hours or more daily, which can deteriorate their physical and mental health. With limited variety and options in tattoo workstation furniture, tattoo artists and clients must make ergonomic sacrifices and adaptations in order to produce and receive their tattoos.
