Hello, I’m Laura Burt. There is nothing more satisfying to me than gaining a new skill. Design has given me so many learning opportunities, every project is an adventure into something totally different. I’m passionate about accessibility, and through design I hope to create a world that is inviting for everyone.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
ELITH takes an EMS first approach, ensuring that EMS can care for patients without sacrificing their personal safety.
The combination of tether, stab-proof vest, and airbags protects wearers inside and out of the ambulance.
The ELITH tether system is fast and easy to use, allowing EMS to focus on the task at hand.
The guided breathing light can be used by EMS workers or by their patients, helping them return to calm after a stressful situation.
The ELITH vest can be adjusted to fit an 50th percentile woman to an 85th percentile man.
The dial fit sides, adjustable shoulder straps and split chest plate allow it to fit nearly every body type. The stab-proof soft aramid fiber panels are flexible and sit comfortably on the body.
To ensure a high level of protection and product longevity, the materials are chosen for performance and durability.
The polyurethane panels are recyclable and easily replaced if damaged. After deployment, the airbags can be re-set and the air cannister replaced.
EMS workers are subjected to significant physical, mental, and emotional strain regularly. The current approach to healthcare advancements is almost entirely patient centered, this leads to the neglection of worker’s needs. The average career length for an EMS worker is only five to eight years, often due to burnout or injury. The risk for developing mental health conditions is four times higher in EMS workers, and 65% of EMS workers have been physically assaulted. The purpose of ELITH is to improve the wellbeing of EMS workers, by preventing serious injuries and addressing mental health needs. The quality-of-life improvements for EMS would inevitably lead to better retention, and thereby lower the strain on the healthcare system.
