Hello, I'm Justin, a 22-year-old industrial design enthusiast with a passion for the outdoors and technology. I've always been fascinated by design and functionality, which led me to create an impact detecting shirt for tackle football players. I have witnessed firsthand the potential dangers and long-term effects of repetitive impacts from football. That's why I designed this shirt with the goal of increasing player safety and promoting long-term health in sports. I hope that my innovative design will not only enhance athletic performance but also contribute to a safer and more sustainable future for sports.

It is also equipped with real-time impact detection technology that provides instant feedback to the wearer, helping them to avoid injuries and optimize their physical activity. Audio ques embedded in the device signal when the shirt is active and connected to the coaches’ tablet.

Each year, millions of adolescent and youth football players suffer injuries varying in severity. Youth football players are up to 40% more likely to sustain injury than those who participate in the next highest injury sport, wrestling. Whether it is a sprained ankle, or a life altering concussions, there is now a greater push to better protect these athletes from injury. Research shows that 20.5% of these injuries consist of the lower leg/ankle area, 16.4% in the knee, and the head/neck combining to 26.3% of all football related injuries. The effects of such injuries go long past the initial recovery period since these injuries lead many students to miss school, and severely affect their day-to-day life. Studies also show long-lasting effects of excessive force to the head can lead to CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Using data collection methods such as observations, interviews, and surveys an analysis will be carried out focusing on the impact these injuries can have on young athletes. Additionally, the use of a one-to-one scale model will aid in the design development process, ergonomic design, and intractability of the final product. Feedback from these observations and models will help to attain a design solution that better protects youth football players from injury, keeps kids in the classroom more often, and improves life longevity and quality for its users.
