Hi, I’m Aviva. Inspiring objects and spaces were always a passion of mine, but I did not realize design could be a career. What makes design exciting is the constant evolution and combination of various fields of knowledge. Good design doesn’t happen in a vacuum; collaboration with different disciplines is essential to understanding the design problem. There is always more to learn and more to discover in design. These past four years of formal education were just the beginning, and I look forward to a career in this ever-changing field.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
Connect is a mobile healthcare unit that enables rural residents to access primary healthcare close to home. Using a combination of future and current technology, rural residents can meet with a doctor even when no doctor is nearby
— allowing them to live where they call home without compromising their health. The mobile healthcare unit strives to mimic the environment of a doctor’s office without requiring any on-site staff. Once a day, personnel do basic upkeep to ensure it remains in working order.
Inside the mobile medical unit, the examination room connects virtually to doctors available in other areas. Users video conference with the doctor over a large screen, and the self-use medical equipment has a smaller screen showing patients how to use the diagnostic tools.
UV sanitization lights are integrated into the medical equipment dashboard and automatically activated between appointments. On top of that, once a day, a mobile unit worker cleans upkeep and sanitizes the mobile medical unit.
Connect is accessible to abled-bodied users and those who require wheelchairs. The chairs inside the examination room are adjustable for users from the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male.
The seats can also fold up to make room for a wheelchair user. Accommodating wheelchair users ensures that all types of users and physical abilities can access the Connect mobile health care service.
Recycling vehicles is a challenge due to their numerous components. Using the same few recoverable materials throughout the mobile medical unit helps with recyclability at the end of the product lifespan. Connect also utilizes an autonomous electric vehicle platform.
The medical cabin can easily disconnect from the electric vehicle platform. Which further helps the recycling of various components. There is also the added benefit of easy repairs and not having to dispose of the whole vehicle when the cabin or autonomous electric platform ends its lifespan.
The Canadian Atlantic Provinces have been dealing with a chronic lack of medical healthcare professionals, including primary care physicians. This region also has the lowest financial compensation for doctors in Canada, leading to a severe inability for doctors and nurses to be recruited and retained. Especially in rural areas where around forty percent of Atlantic Canada’s population lives. Further aggravating this issue is the current brick-and-mortar-centric medical system. Primary care is mainly provided through stationary hospitals, clinics, and medical offices; sometimes, they are not nearby in rural areas. The Connect mobile health clinic aims to increase access to primary health care providers for residents living in rural areas of the Atlantic Provinces. Connect is an autonomous mobile medical clinic for primary care doctors to provide remote care in this underserved region.
