Program Overview

Humber’s Landscape Technician diploma program is based on the principles of sustainability, conservation and environmental sensitivity. You’ll learn about landscape design and development, site construction, general horticulture, grounds maintenance, and related technologies through a combination of in-class studies and hands-on landscape training.

At Humber, we have exceptional facilities for landscape education. The Humber Arboretum, for example, is a 250-acre botanical garden centred on the west branch of the Humber River, surrounding Humber’s North Campus. It includes ornamental, woodland and wildlife gardens serving as a unique living classroom for plant studies, construction, arboricultural and horticultural skills. Our construction lab is housed in a weather-protected 8,000-square-foot facility which allows you to build full-scale structures such as decks, gazebos and retaining walls. Our computer labs use the latest in computer-aided design (CAD) software which enables you to prepare professional construction documents.

The Humber Experience

medal winners

Humber Students Take Silver at Skills Ontario

Humber students Matthew Silvaggio and Lucas Kennedy have won Silver for the Horticulture and Landscape competition at this year’s Ontario Technological Skills Competition. During the competition, the two were tasked with building a garden based on a common set of criteria and drawings. This included creating walls from precast paving units, laying paving stones, plant selection and placement of landscape rocks.

Schulich Builders: Scholarships for Skilled Trades

The Schulich Builders program will combat the shortage of skilled trades in Ontario and amplify their importance and value to our community by awarding 100 annual scholarships to the most promising candidates across colleges in Ontario including Humber.

Your Career

A career in the multifaceted landscape industry lets you combine your interests in construction, design, plant materials and the environment. Opportunities exist with landscape contractors, design firms, design-build firms, garden centres, nurseries, municipalities, golf courses and in technical sales. Some of our graduates establish their own companies or obtain senior supervisory positions within the industry. Our annual Landscape and Horticultural Job Fair matches first- and second-year students with potential employers. Our graduates often find themselves with a range of job choices and prospects.
