Program Overview

Humber’s Electrical Techniques certificate program is designed to introduce you to the fundamental elements of the trade. We aim to facilitate your employment by giving you practical experience with trade regulations and practices.

Throughout your program, you will get a solid understanding of the various technical elements of the electrical trade. There will be a significant practical component to the program.

Upon completion, students are eligable to be exempted from the in-school portion of the Electrical Apprenticeship program.

Courses Program Standards

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  1. Assist in the interpretation and preparation of electrical drawings including other related documents and graphics.
  2. Analyze and solve simple technical problems related to basic electrical systems by applying mathematics and science principles.
  3. Use and maintain test and instrumentation equipment.
  4. Assemble basic electrical circuits and equipment to fulfill requirements and specifications under the supervision of a qualified person.
  5. Assist in the installation and troubleshooting of basic electrical machines and associated control systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  6. Assist in testing and troubleshooting electrical and electronic circuits, equipment, and systems by using established procedures under the supervision of a qualified person.
  7. Assist in the troubleshooting of control systems under the supervision of a qualified person. 

  8. Assist in conducting quality assurance procedures under the supervision of a qualified person.
  9. Assist in the preparation and maintenance of records and documentation systems.
  10. Install and assist in testing telecommunication systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  11. Apply health and safety standards and best practices to workplaces.
  12. Perform tasks in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, procedures, standards, regulations, and ethical principles.
  13. Apply basic electrical cabling requirements and install and test system grounding for a specified number of applications under the supervision of a qualified person.
  14. Identify problems and troubleshoot electrical systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  15. Assist in the selection of electrical equipment, systems and components to fulfill the requirements and specifications under the supervision of a qualified person.
  16. Use computer skills and tools to solve basic electrical related problems.

Congratulations to all competitors and winners for making Humber proud. We can't wait to see what the future holds for all of you!

The Skills Ontario Competition is Canada's largest skilled trade and technology competition, which offers a unique opportunity for top students to demonstrate their talents and skills. Over two and a half days, they capture the attention of their educators, family, friends and prospective employers. Winners are awarded with Gold, Silver or Bronze medals, including monetary awards and the opportunity to compete in the Skills Canada National Competition after which they have a chance to move on to World Skills Competition.

Numerous Humber students, from different fields, gave their best in the competitions, and brought home medals.

Congratulations to all competitors and winners for making Humber proud. We can't wait to see what the future holds for all of you!

On October 21, 2019, the Provincial Government of Ontario announced the renaming of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU). Both names may appear on this website.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 3 requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

    • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
      • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
      • Grade 12 Mathematics (MAP4C, MCT4C, MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent)
      • Two Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

    or

    or

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a WES or ICAS evaluation.

How to Apply

Applications to Humber are made through ontariocolleges.ca. Be sure to submit your application by the equal consideration deadline of February 1. You may apply after February 1, however, post-February 1 applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis depending on the availability of the space in the program.
