Program Overview

Humber's new Master of Computer Science - Cybersecurity Operations and Management program bridges a critical gap in the cybersecurity industry by developing leaders who possess both advanced technical expertise and strategic management capabilities. 

Developed through extensive collaboration with industry leaders, the curriculum seamlessly integrates technical mastery with strategic leadership. Core courses span integrated infrastructure cybersecurity, advanced network security, secure software development, post-quantum cryptography, ethics and governance frameworks, privacy engineering, and cloud security architectures. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are equipped to navigate both current threats and emerging challenges in the rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape. 

As Ontario's first applied master's degree in this specialized field, this program represents a pioneering approach to graduate education in high-demand disciplines. What distinguishes Humber's applied master's model is its commitment to industry-integrated learning: all research and scholarly activities directly address real-world cybersecurity challenges facing organizations today.

Work-Integrated Learning  

The program culminates in a comprehensive industry applied research project spanning the entire fourth semester, providing at least 300 hours of hands-on experience solving authentic cybersecurity challenges. Working closely with industry mentors and faculty advisors, you will tackle complex problems facing real organizations, from Fortune 500 companies to community agencies. 

Sample project areas include:

  • integrated security solutions for critical infrastructure - designing comprehensive security architectures for essential services  
  • financial services security frameworks - developing advanced fraud detection systems, secure payment processing architectures, and regulatory compliance solutions
  • health-care data protection systems - creating privacy-preserving frameworks for electronic health records, medical device security and compliant data sharing across health-care networks 
  • smart manufacturing and supply chain security - building blockchain-based tracking and IoT-enabled monitoring solutions for Industry 4.0 environments 
  • retail and e-commerce security solutions - designing secure payment systems, customer data protection frameworks and anti-fraud mechanisms for omnichannel retail operations 
  • clean energy and smart grid protection - developing specialized security frameworks for renewable energy infrastructure, smart meters and distributed energy resources
  • government and public sector cybersecurity - creating risk assessment tools, citizen data protection systems and secure digital service delivery platforms for municipal, provincial and federal agencies 

This capstone experience synthesizes technical knowledge with strategic thinking, producing actionable solutions that demonstrate your readiness for cybersecurity leadership across all major economic sectors.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Students benefit from access to Humber Polytechnic's cutting-edge Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (Barrett CTI), a hub of technological advancement and applied research.

Within the Barrett CTI, the Digital Technology Hub serves as a collaborative link where students, faculty and industry experts converge to tackle real-world cybersecurity challenges. This advanced facility features enterprise-grade infrastructure including a dedicated data centre, cyber range capabilities and specialized penetration testing equipment. Here, students work directly with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and not-for-profit organizations to strengthen their cybersecurity approaches against evolving threats.

These facilities provide an authentic learning environment where theoretical knowledge transforms into practical solutions, preparing graduates to lead cybersecurity initiatives in complex organizational settings.

Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation

The Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation brings students, faculty, industry and the community together to solve real world problems collaboratively. This 93,000 square foot facility provides an opportunity for students to collaborate across multiple disciplines and obtain hands-on experience using cutting edge equipment and facilities, preparing them for the jobs of the future.

How To Become An Apprentice

Becoming an Apprentice

Find an employer willing to sponsor you as an apprentice.

Admission Requirements

Admission selection is based on the academic criteria indicated. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

Admission selection is based on the following three requirements:

  • Academic

    To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:
    • A four-year honours degree (or equivalent) from a recognized institution in the following relevant areas of study: computer science, information technology,  software, computer engineering, or a closely related subject. 
    • A minimum CGPA of a B (70-74%) overall, or within the final two years of the relevant honours undergraduate degree.

     

    Applicants not meeting the specified academic admission requirements will be considered based on a combination of academic and industry specific experience. Submission of academic transcripts, a current resumé outlining relevant industry-related work experience and a letter of interest in the program will be used to assess applicants for candidacy in the master’s program.
     

    Mature Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

    College Transfer Applicants

    Diplomas and Certificates

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

    University Transfer Applicants

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

    Degrees

    An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  • English Language Proficiency

    All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  • International Credit Evaluation

    Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
