Celebrating a FAST Spring Convocation

Dear Colleagues,
“Be Bold, be brave, be amazing”.

Humber College President Chris Whitaker’s words resounded in every heart on June 19 and 20 as the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology students gathered with family, classmates, friends, professors and the Humber community to celebrate the culmination of years of hard work and perseverance.

At Convocation our students take center stage as the spotlight illuminates their many academic and professional achievements including their commitment, passion and talent. So it was no wonder for two days at our faculty convocation, the atmosphere was charged with pure joy and celebration as degrees, awards of excellence and other honorary accolades were conferred on graduates.

Convocation is a time to look back on the community of faculty and classmates who have shaped us professionally and academically, but also touched our lives personally. Hearing from our own students across the faculty programs, it is evident that excellence in faculty programming and community is something our graduates are proud to take away with them.

Bachelor of Industrial Design, Award of Excellence recipient, Ashuni Patel, accredited her ‘blossom both as a designer and an individual’ to her program of which she also says, “(it) helped me land a job that I am well prepared to take on straight out of college.” Similar sentiments were echoed from their classmates Industrial design and design foundation students, Lauren D'Souza & Adam Dimla mentioned how they’re ‘excited about be moving forward with all that Humber College has taught (them) about the work force.”

Abhishek Yadav (Project Management graduate program) applauded the ‘hands-on experience with industry trained professors, Alternative Capstone projects which give you a sneak peek into real life work experiences’ and a program which ’prepares you for a highly competitive workforce which makes you ready to take on anything and anyone!’

Also referring to the exceptional hands-on skills training and leadership skills in their programs, Excellence award recipients Theerapat Angkapunyadech (Mechanical Engineering technician) and Mauricio Toigo (Electromechanical Engineering Technology) said respectively, “It provided me with a variety of career paths, helping me attain a great job” and the ability to “develop leadership and communication skills as well as network with industry leaders in my field of study."

Almost all students interviewed at convocation attributed their strong academic success to caring and engaged faculty. Governor General Award recipient, Mit Patel, Electrical Engineering Technology - controls systems is quoted as saying ““Faculty and peers are concerned, they were everything a student could ask for.”

Faculty also become invaluable as international students face the overwhelming challenge of adjusting to a new culture as was the case with Shah Zaib, Mechanical Engineering Technology Award of Excellence recipient. Zaib points to faculty professors Hassan Hassan and Sherif Hanna whom “really went out of their way to make sure I succeeded not only as a student but also as a professional in the industry.” Even Bachelor of Interior Design, Award of Excellence recipient, Miranda Del Plavignano credited her faculty, saying “I could not have accomplished as much as I did without the support and guidance of the program faculty. Their mentorship has helped shape me into the designer I am today. “

Humber College a global leader in polytechnic education. It has always been our goal to equip you to become the leader you have striven to be; the leader the world needs. These last two days are a testament to the hard work and effort you’ve expended to accomplish these goals.

As Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology it is my great pleasure, on behalf of the entire FAST faculty, to congratulate all our graduates on their achievements, echoing the words of our president, as ‘confident, connected and courageous’ global leaders.
