Building Construction Technician With Optional Co-op

Starting with the Fall 2019 intake, this program features an Optional Co-op stream. Participating in Co-op will enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in an actual work environment, and gain valuable experience that will enhance your employment prospects upon graduation. Co-op work terms are 14 weeks of full-time paid employment (minimum 12 weeks/420 hours).

Attend a Co-op Information Session

As a first step in your exploration, plan to attend a Co-op Information Session in Semester 1, to learn more about participating in co-op, the application process and eligibility requirements. You will be notified of the Information Session schedule via email.

Co-op Application Process

All students must be enrolled full-time in the regular (non co-op) academic program. Midway through Semester 1 you will have the opportunity to apply to co-op via an application form. Acceptance into the co-op stream will be a competitive process since spaces are limited and not all students who meet the minimum academic eligibility requirements may be accepted.

“Conditional acceptances” into co-op will be extended based on your academic standing at mid-term of Semester 1. Acceptances will be firmed up – or revoked – based on your academic standing at the end of Semester 1, your participation in Co-op Readiness activities, and labour market conditions. You will be notified of your status via email. Upon acceptance into the co-op stream, you must complete a Work Preparation course in Semester 2, and a work term per the work/study sequence shown below. NOTE: Humber cannot guarantee co-op employment. As a co-op student you will be required to actively job search for your own placement in addition to the services and job leads provided by the Co-op Office.

Academic Requirements to Enter the Co-op Stream

  • Enrolled as a full-time student.
  • Successful completion of all core courses in Semester 1 as scheduled, with a minimum GPA of 75%.

Academic Requirements to Advance to the Co-op Work Term

  • Successful completion of the Work Preparation course in Semester 2.
  • Successful completion of all core courses in Semesters 1 and 2 as scheduled, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 75%.

International Students

In addition to the academic eligibility requirements listed above, International students must obtain a Canadian Co-op Work Permit (CWP) prior to commencing work. Upon confirmed acceptance into the co-op stream after the end of Semester 1, the Work Placement office will prepare a letter to be used in your application for the CWP.

Work Preparation

Managing and conducting a job search is part of the co-op experience. Participating students are required to complete a Work Preparation course prior to the first work term to help them develop effective job search skills including resume preparation, job market research, networking and interviewing. Co-op opportunities are not guaranteed, therefore, students are expected to actively network and search for their own placement.

The Work Placement Services Team provides a range of services to support student success, including coaching students throughout their job search and placement, and working with employers to identify co-op opportunities.
