Jing Shan Lai

My name is Jing Shan Lai. I am passionate about all kinds of art and design. I believe that human interactions are the bridges that connect spaces and their designs, as well as providing interesting and unique experiences.

Project Overview

Ossington Boutique Hotel is a two-storey building designed with COVID-19 considerations, unique branding strategies, sustainability approaches, and technological incorporations that encourages users of the space to experience, explore and interact. The hotel aims to become one of the best attractions of the Ossington Avenue neighbourhood alongside other museums, galleries, cafés, restaurants, and retail stores. It features an event space/ art gallery/ lounges, a bar, a restaurant, and 11 guestrooms.

Concept/Design Process

The idea of discovery is drawn from the building location, 21 Ossington Ave. Ossington Avenue is a leading Toronto destination for pedestrianism, nightlife, dining, music, art, and shopping. It is a neighbourhood full of discoveries and adventures. The concept of discovery focuses on the movement, flow, adventure, exploration, and experience within the space. The spaces, circulation, and traffic flow are designed with an intention to draw users of the space to explore, discover, and create interactions. The movements and interactions develop unique experiences that pertain to the users' perceptions.

Site Plan/Floor Plans

The site plan shows the surrounding neighbourhood of the Ossington Boutique Hotel which consists of restaurants, cafes, retail stores, galleries, museums, fitness centres, and residential houses. The building is accessible via walking, public transportations, and cars. The first floor of the Ossington Boutique Hotel features a main entrance, lobby, lounges, reception, a bar, and a restaurant. It also houses the administration office, kitchen, washrooms, and back of house spaces. The entire second floor is dedicated to 11 guestrooms with an open-to-below interconnected floor space located at the centre of the floor.

The following renderings show the focal areas of the Ossington Boutique Hotel, which are the lobby and lounge, bar and lounge, and the restaurant. The lobby and lounge doubled as an event space with loose furniture configurations that can be easily reconfigured. The curved wood ceiling is a unique feature of the main open space and it serves the directional purpose of leading people into other spaces of the first floor. A wall of bronze panels divided the bar and lounge from the lobby while providing a sneak peek of the bar with gaps in between each panel. The restaurant carries the same design intend by incorporating the idea of bronze panels at the entrance.
