My name is Carlos Manago, and I am a student in the Bachelor of Industrial Design program at Humber College. I went into the design program due to my interest in computers, advancing technology, devices, and much more. My hobbies include tinkering with tech parts and gaming, which also contribute to my interest in design. In the future, I hope to be able to design and/or create all kinds of technologies, ranging from computer peripherals and devices to more advanced technologies such as self-driving electric vehicles.
The four essential pillars encompass human-centric design approach and the understanding of full-bodied, three dimensional physical interaction of user, product and environment. The projects generate innovative solutions using research-driven, evidence-based designs which focus on the user experience.
As a designer, one of the main goals that we are trying to achieve in designing and creating a product is that it will enhance the human lifestyle of users by making all things easier and simpler to use.
Delfin's purpose is to enhance a physically challenged user's experience while scuba diving by easing their mobility underwater.
The design of a product should show an easy understanding of how it is used and what it can do.
Delfin's form and design inform the user on how to interact with the scooter, with the paddings and control handles demonstrating to the user that they lay on the scooter in a "Superman" position. The back of the scooter also includes padding and a support arm which indicates the location for the user's legs.
The form and measurements of a product's design should take into consideration the human factors and ergonomics of the users that will be using it.
Delfin's curved shape helps to position the user in a comfortable swimming position, with the control handles being able to move back and forth to accommodate different user sizes and the support arm being able to do the same.
Sustainability is an important aspect when designing and creating a product as it illustrates the consideration for the environment, the future generations, the economy, and so forth.
Delfin's body is made from recyclable plastic materials, uses renewable energy with rechargeable batteries and electric-powered motor, runs silently to not disturb the surrounding wildlife, and runs efficiently so that it has a long lifespan.
Scuba diving is a strenuous but fun recreational activity in which a person dives underwater to explore, observe, and experience the marine environment and wildlife. Scuba diving has gone through many advancements over the years, with earlier equipment used for diving being a heavy metal suit. Now, equipment used for Scuba diving is much lighter and more efficient in helping people dive underwater, with wetsuits helping to keep users warm, oxygen tanks, breathing apparatus, etc. But even with the new changes, most of the gears used during the activity do not fully support individuals that are physically challenged, as most of the scuba gears are designed and standardized to fit an abled-body person. This project aims to help with making scuba diving more accessible for the physically challenged.
