PRACTICAL TRAINING

As part of your training you will participate in a variety of practical hands-on projects. One of the main objectives of this practical training is to reinforce your technical and/or design training - through building structures and gardens you will gain a greater understanding of the technical and design aspects of the work. Here you will find an archive of projects that our students have done.

CANADA BLOOMS
Canada Blooms is a major Flower and Garden Show, which takes place in March of each year at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Since its inception our second year students have built one of the major feature gardens as part of their practical training. Each garden is a comprehensive project involving diverse elements such as gazebos, walls, paving, planting, waterfalls, ponds, etc. and provides an excellent opportunity for our students to experience the entire process from initial design to final construction.

STUDENT WORK
Here are some samples of individual student work.

FIRMANI RESIDENCE
As part of their Landscape Design Studio course the students all do a design for the same site. The following are samples of the students’ designs for the Firmani Residence.

SMITH RESIDENCE
As part of their Landscape Design Studio course the students all do a design for the same site. The following are samples of the students’ designs for the Smith Residence.

OTHER PROJECTS
We are continuously working on projects here at Humber, be it in the HUMBER ARBORETUM or elsewhere.

LANDSCAPE ONTARIO CONGRESS
Each January our second year students build the Feature Garden at the annual Landscape Ontario Conference and Trade Show held at the Toronto Congress Centre in Toronto. It is an opportunity to showcase the Program and the talents of our students to members of the industry, who are potential employers of our graduates.

WORLD YOUTH DAY PROJECT
In June of 2000 our program was honoured by an invitation to design and build the staircase garden to the stage used for the mass by The Holy Father, Pope John Paul III, at Downsview Park in Toronto. The design is based on a symbolic stream, waterfall and pond built entirely with plants. Dark green Burning Bush shrubs are mass-planted to represent the stream banks. Blue Lobelia and blue Salvia are used for the water, and white Lobelia for the highlights and foaming or white water of the waterfall. The pre-apprenticeship students built the garden. The mass was attended by a live audience of half million worshippers and viewed by a worldwide audience of millions.

FLORA MONTREAL
In June of 2007 student volunteers and staff of the program designed and built a garden at Flora Montreal – an outdoor garden exposition located on the historic Old Port of Montreal. The garden featured:

  • Screen and faux bay window that will include mosaic panels done by local children.
  • Patio built with a premium interlocking paving stone from Techo Bloc Limited.
  • A deck made of composite (plastic) wood manufactured by Brite Manufacturing. The deck is built over the pool and is designed to be flooded to occasionally serve as a spray pool.
  • A 7’ high waterfall with a walk-through tunnel behind it and flanked by terraced planters of Castlerok precast blocks manufactured by Oaks Concrete Products Ltd. The pool and waterfall are built with liner, pump and components supplied by Atponds Ltd.
  • Sunken play pit protected from the wind and sun by vine covered wire mesh screen and pergola.
