What is a mature student and how do I qualify?
If you do not possess the minimum admission requirement but are nineteen years of age by the first official day of classes, you may apply as a mature student. The Admissions department will assess your academic strengths through testing in the required courses for this program. Based on the results of the test you may be offered admission or academic upgrading to better prepare you for your studies.

Do I require testing for admission?
No, high school grades are used for admission. Mature students, however, may be asked to complete testing. Please see above question.
Placement testing, administered after admission is granted, is used to place you in the correct English and Math course.

What grades do I require for admission?

Do I have to do the testing at Humber or can I write the test in my school/area?
The placement testing must be done at Humber. You will receive a letter from us to advise you about this.
If you are applying as a mature student for admission and live over 200 km (2 hour drive) from Humber, you may find it necessary to make arrangements for distance testing. To arrange distance testing contact the Office of the Registrar at 416 675 5005 and ask to speak to the Enrolment Representative responsible for this program.

What is an exemption/transfer credit and how do I know the requirements of the Humber course?
An exemption/transfer credit may be granted if you have demonstrated sufficient knowledge to satisfy the requirements of a particular course. To qualify for an exemption/transfer credit you must have completed a credit course at another recognized institution (accredited). The course must be similar in content and credits to the course you are seeking an exemption/transfer credit for. You must also have achieved a minimum grade of 60 per cent.

Where do I study? When can I begin?,
Classes are held at the North Campus which is located in Etobicoke in the Finch/Hwy 27 area. Some classes, especially the climbing classes may be off campus. Classes begin in early January.

How long will it take me to complete this program?
This is a 1-year certificate program with Semester 1 running for 12 weeks starting in early January followed by a minimum 6-month paid industry placement between April and December. Semester 2 runs for 8 weeks starting in early January of the following year.

Can I study part-time?
It is possible to take courses on a part-time basis provided you get the approval of the program coordinator, you have any required pre-requisites and there is space in the course after all full-time students are accommodated.

Is there work placement offered as part of the program? How does it work?
You are required to work in a paid arboriculture job for a minimum of 6 months between Semester 1 and 2 during the April to December period.

What kind of English Language requirements does this program have?
College graduates need to communicate effectively. Employers are requiring our graduates to be increasingly more skilled in their language abilities. They must know how to read and interpret information and communicate their ideas both orally and in writing. As part of the program requirements, Humber students are required to complete English communications courses. These courses are designed to help you perform the reading and writing tasks that are expected.

First and foremost you must enjoy the type of work involved in this industry. You must be physically fit, physically capable of climbing and without a fear of heights.
