Our Program

Humber’s Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program provides you with the skills needed for a career in the growing field of civil infrastructure. Infrastructure encompasses all of the essential elements necessary for our society to operate and includes buildings, transportation (highways and transit), municipal services (water, wastewater) and green spaces.

The curriculum, designed in collaboration with industry, covers all aspects of infrastructure, from the inception of an idea to the completion of construction and blends in-class academic learning with hands-on laboratory work. Students learn how to design and build structures (steel, concrete and timber), municipal services (water, wastewater) and highways using design codes and standards. Additionally, they learn all the skills necessary to support design and construction including surveying and geographical information systems (GIS), drafting (AutoCAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM)), soils and materials testing, project administration and management, and environmental protection and remediation. At Humber, students learn from experienced faculty and industry experts, many of whom work with Greater Toronto Area construction and engineering firms. Humber’s strong reputation in the civil engineering industry can give graduates an edge in the employment market.

Work Placement

Our program features an optional civil field experience. The field experience is designed to enable students to apply their skills and knowledge in an actual work environment, as well as enhance their employability upon graduation. The work experience occurs after the completion of semester four for a minimum of 400 hours. Participating students are required to complete work preparation sessions prior to the work term to help them develop effective job search skills including resumé writing and interviewing. Humber provides a range of services to support their success including working with business, industry and government to identify employment.

The Humber Experience

Civil Engineering video

Watch the video to see some of the projects that Civil Engineering Technologists would have helped create.

Student Survey Competition

Civil Engineering applies mathematical, scientific and technological principles to manage infrastructure development. Recently, students put their learning to the test with Humber's first Surveying Competition.

The Humber Advantage

Distinguished Faculty & Partners

At Humber, you will learn from industry experts, many who work with Greater Toronto Area construction and engineering firms. Our industry partners provide placement opportunities and guidance on how to make the curriculum current and relevant. Humber has a strong reputation in the civil engineering industry, giving you an edge in the employment market.

Software and Technology

Students in this program work with leading edge software utilized in drawing preparation, surveying, project management, estimating, structural analysis and design, and underground infrastructure such as stormwater management systems, water distribution systems, and sewage collection systems.

Your Career

Investment in engineering infrastructure construction in Ontario has increased dramatically during the last 10 years. Continuing investment in infrastructure development and redevelopment in the GTA has resulted in strong job placement for our graduates in recent years. This trend will continue for the foreseeable future.

Our graduates work in both the public and private sectors of industry, typically with municipalities, engineering consulting firms, general contractors, builder/developers, architects, land or quantity surveyors, and environmental agencies. Careers could include working as designers, project managers, inspectors, drafters, or contractors on structural, municipal, transportation or environmental projects.
